Why can't my student request for LORs?

A guide for counselor to help their student on missing LoR Button

Written by Jenny Jiang

Some students may have trouble finding the Request for Letter of Recommendation (LoR) button on their Recommendation tab. Here's how you can check and help the student:

1) Students to link their Common App accounts with Cialfo

In order for documents (such as LoR) to be sent for a student from Cialfo to colleges and universities that accept the Common App, a student’s Cialfo account must be linked to their Common App account. Click here to learn more.

*Please note that students should not request recommendations directly via Common App.

2) Check the settings for LoR on the Configuration page

  • Make sure that the toggle is on for students to request recommendations

  • Set the limit for the amount of teachers students can request recommendations from

*If a student had already requested for number of maximum letters set by the limit, the LoR button will no longer appear in their Recommendation tab.

  • If a student needs to request additional recommendations beyond the set limit, school admins can increase the maximum number of recommenders in the configuration settings. To do this, navigate to the school’s configuration settings, adjust the "Maximum number of teachers" to the desired number, and save the changes.

  • Alternatively, admins can remove or reset an existing recommendation request to free up space for new requests.

3) Check the application year of the student

  • Make sure the application year is 2024 so that it reflects that the student is in the current application cycle.

Once all the above has been checked and updated, the student should be able to view and click on the LoR button in their Recommendation tab. Click here to see how students can request for letter of recommendation. If the issue persists, students should contact their school admin or counselor for assistance. Admins can adjust the recommendation settings or clear pending requests to resolve the problem.
